Common Percentage Formulas
Percentages are used in almost every aspect of life, from calculating tips at a restaurant to understanding interest rates on loans. Here are the formulas our calculator uses:
1. Percentage Formula (Simple)
To find X% of Y, use the formula:
(X / 100) * Y
2. Percentage Increase/Decrease
To calculate the percentage change between two numbers:
((New Value – Old Value) / Old Value) * 100
- If the result is positive, it’s an increase.
- If the result is negative, it’s a decrease.
Real World Examples
| Scenario | Math |
|---|---|
| Sales Tax (10% on $50) | 0.10 * 50 = $5 |
| Discount (20% off $100) | $100 – (0.20 * 100) = $80 |
| Test Score (45 out of 50) | (45 / 50) * 100 = 90% |
